Hello London

The move to London has been fun but so so busy, we’ve been here nearly two months and it feels like my feet have hardly touched the ground.

Huntsville – our final Canadian port of call

Huntsville

Our final stop on our trans-Canada tour was Huntsville, famed for hosting the last G8 conference it is also home to one of my Mum’s friends who had kindly invited us to stay. It was lovely to end our Canadian experience staying in a real Canadian family home, visiting a cottage, the likes of which we had heard so much about during the last two years and getting to see some of Ontario’s mighty lakes.

Ottawa Museumfest

Ottawa

Although we were flying out of Toronto we knew we wanted to travel just a bit further east to visit Canada’s capital city Ottawa. It was definitely my favourite stop of the trip and the only place that I wished we could have spent more time in. Built on the border of Ontario and Quebec the city is spattered with old buildings and turquoise rooftops peek out around every corner. In the bright November sunshine it really was incredibly pretty.

Ottawa

The other amazing thing about Ottawa – apart from the beautiful architecture – is the museums. You could stay here for weeks and go to a different museum or gallery each day, as it was we only had three days which was not really long enough to see all that we might have liked.

We bought a tourist saver ticket which allowed us to visit the Canadian War Museum and the Museum of Civilization for a reduced fee and it was definitely worth the money. The War Museum is housed in a building that looks like it could withstand a nuclear attack, almost completely below ground it appears from the horizon looking ominous, yet inside youdon’t notice the lack of light and instead can spend hours learning about all the wars Canadians have fought and the impact and creation of the country as a result of them.

Across the river, in Quebec is the museum of Civilization. Its domed roof and curved walls are clearly visible from the other side and the architecture itself was almost as intriguing as the potential held by the contents inside. Once within its walls we were treated to engrossing exhibitions full of reconstructions of First Nation houses and townships throughout Canadian history.

We spent a morning exploring the Parliament buildings that sit perched on a hilltop over looking the river which was fascinating. Smart suited civil servants were rushing about in every direction, but we were free to admire the view and the statues that are scattered around the buildings. I took tea with the ladies who passed an act declaring that women could become MPs and lent my scarf to another who was horribly under dressed for the frigid temperatures.

Other Ottawa highlights included trying Beaver tail (deep fried pastry, ours came with chocolate) being upgraded to a hotel suite that our London flat would disappear into at least twice over and our last North American diner experience.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

As good luck would have it my friend Jo from Vancouver was visiting her Mum in St Catharine’s at the same time as we were staying in Toronto. Now for those of you not familiar with Canadian geography, St Catharine’s is just south of Toronto and really near Niagara Falls.

I had been keen to see the falls whilst we were so close and this was by far the best way to see them. Trains to the area from Toronto leave once a day, and you guessed it, early in the morning, and don’t return until the evening. I have no idea what we would have done in Niagara for all that time. As it was Jo had a car and could act as our tour guide so we were able to see lots more of the area and limit our time in Niagara Falls town to just long enough to admire the horrendousness of it all and then run away.

We drove around St Catharine’s and out to Port Dalhousie to admire Lake Ontario and squint to see Toronto on the opposite shore. We had lunch in pretty little Niagara-on-the-lake and then drove to see the falls.

I had expected something jaw-droppingly incredible, I mean these are Niagara Falls, and they were, but I’m afraid they couldn’t hold a candle to the Rocky Mountains. Perhaps it was the sheer naffness of the town and they greyness of the day, but after about 15 minutes of looking and a bit of wandering along peering over the railings getting thoroughly soaked by the spray being whipped off the falls by the wind I was pretty much, meh, Falls, where’s the tea at?

Apparently I’m very hard to please!

Toronto Tales

We’ve been home nearly a month now and every time I’ve sat down at a computer with the intention of finishing our travelogue I’ve been distracted job, flat and furniture hunting. Fortunately, I have now secured employment, found a flat and gone too broke to buy any more furniture, so I’m back to the travel ramblings.

From Winnipeg we hopped back on the train and wound our way through the lakes and trees to Toronto to stay with Keeley and Mike.

By this time we were starting to feel a bit travel weary so we spent our time in Toronto hanging out with friends, eschewing any overly touristy activities. We ate great food, and drank lots of coffee and beer.

The one touristy activity that we did partake in was a tour of the Steamworks brewery. It is a boutique brewery that makes Steamworks Pilsner and nothing else, lucky for me this is probably my favourite Canadian beer so we made the most of the free samples.

We spent time wandering and browsing in colourful Kensington market. The whole place is an explosion of colour: from the brightly painted houses with their contrasting railings, to the shops whose wares spill out into the street.
